The system is installed on the outside of the building, helping reduce heat loss through external walls without significantly reducing the usable space inside the home.
A complete external insulation system includes several connected layers. Each layer has a specific purpose, and correct preparation and installation are essential for the performance and durability of the finished façade.
Initial inspection and preparation
Before installation begins, the condition of the existing walls should be assessed. The substrate must be suitable for receiving the insulation system.
Loose render, unstable coatings, dirt and other contamination may need to be removed. Cracks, damaged areas and irregular surfaces may also require repair.
External pipes, cables, lights, vents and other fittings must be considered before work starts. Windowsills, roof edges and drainage details are particularly important because the thickness of the wall will increase after insulation is installed.
Installation of insulation boards
Insulation boards are fixed to the exterior wall using the method specified for the selected system. Adhesive and mechanical fixings may both form part of the installation.
Boards should be fitted closely together and arranged to reduce continuous joints. Care is required around windows, doors, corners and other openings.
Poorly fitted boards can create uneven surfaces and may affect the appearance of the final façade.
Reinforcement layer
After the insulation boards are installed and prepared, a reinforced base coat is applied.
Reinforcement mesh is embedded into the base coat to strengthen the surface and help control cracking. Additional reinforcement may be required around openings, external corners and areas exposed to greater impact.
The mesh must be positioned correctly within the base coat rather than simply placed on top of the surface.
Corners, openings and details
The quality of an external insulation project depends heavily on the details.
Special profiles and reinforcement elements may be used around:
- windows and doors;
- external corners;
- lower wall areas;
- roof junctions;
- expansion joints;
- sills and drainage points.
These areas require careful workmanship because they are exposed to movement, weather and water.
Primer and final façade finish
Once the reinforced base layer has dried and the surface is ready, a suitable primer is applied before the decorative finish.
The final coat gives the façade its colour and texture. Common finishes include textured acrylic, silicone and mineral-based renders, depending on the selected system and project requirements.
Colour should be chosen with consideration for the building, surrounding properties and long-term maintenance. Very dark colours may behave differently from lighter finishes when exposed to direct sunlight.
Weather conditions during installation
External façade work is affected by temperature, rain, wind and direct sunlight.
Materials should not be applied in unsuitable weather conditions. Fresh layers need protection while drying, especially during periods of rain, strong wind or rapid temperature change.
Scaffolding protection may be required to help create more controlled working conditions.
Maintenance of the finished façade
External insulation systems are designed to provide a durable finish, but the façade should still be inspected periodically.
Dirt, algae, impact damage, failed sealant and water-related defects should be addressed before they develop into larger problems.
The surface should be cleaned using methods suitable for the specific render system. Aggressive pressure washing can damage certain finishes.
A complete system requires coordinated installation
External insulation is more than attaching insulation boards to a wall. It is a complete system involving preparation, fixing, reinforcement, weatherproof detailing and decorative finishing.
