How to Prepare Walls Before Painting
Painting can transform the appearance of a room, but the quality of the final result depends heavily on what happens before the paint is applied. Even expensive paint may look uneven or begin to peel if the wall has not been cleaned, repaired and prepared correctly.
Proper surface preparation creates a stable and even base for the new coating. It also helps the paint adhere correctly and reduces the risk of visible cracks, stains, rough areas and colour differences.
Inspect the condition of the walls
The first step is to examine the wall carefully. Look for cracks, loose paint, holes, water stains, damaged plaster, mould and areas where the surface feels soft or unstable.
Minor cosmetic damage can often be repaired during normal preparation. However, recurring dampness, major cracking or loose plaster may indicate a deeper problem that should be investigated before painting begins.
Painting over an unresolved moisture problem will usually hide it only temporarily.
Protect the room
Furniture should be moved away from the walls or removed from the room where possible. Floors, radiators, windows and fixed furniture should be covered before sanding or painting begins.
Switches, sockets, handles and other fittings may also need protection. Careful masking helps create clean edges and prevents paint from reaching surfaces that should remain unpainted.
Clean the surface
Walls collect dust, grease, smoke residue and other contamination over time. Kitchens and frequently used rooms may require more thorough cleaning than bedrooms or recently renovated spaces.
The surface should be clean and dry before filling, sanding or priming. Painting directly over grease or dust can prevent proper adhesion and may produce patches in the final finish.
Remove loose material
Flaking paint, loose filler and unstable plaster must be removed. A scraper can be used carefully to take away material that is no longer securely attached to the wall.
The edges around damaged areas should be made stable before repair. Covering loose material with new filler or paint does not solve the underlying problem.
Fill cracks and holes
Small cracks, fixing holes and surface damage can usually be repaired with an appropriate filler. Deeper damage may require more than one application.
The filler should be allowed to dry fully before sanding. Trying to sand or paint it too early can damage the repair and create an uneven surface.
Large cracks or cracks that continue to return may require additional assessment rather than simple cosmetic filling.
Sand the repaired areas
Sanding helps blend repaired sections into the surrounding wall. The objective is not to remove unnecessary amounts of material, but to create a smooth transition between the original surface and the repaired area.
After sanding, dust should be removed carefully. Dust left on the wall can mix with primer or paint and create a rough finish.
Apply primer where necessary
Primer helps stabilise porous surfaces and improves paint adhesion. It may be particularly important on:
- newly plastered walls;
- repaired areas;
- bare timber;
- stained surfaces;
- highly absorbent walls;
- surfaces with significant colour differences.
The correct primer depends on the surface and the problem being addressed. A general primer may not be suitable for every stain or material.
Check the surface under good lighting
Before applying the finishing paint, the wall should be checked from different angles and under strong light. Small imperfections are often difficult to see until the surface is illuminated from the side.
It is easier to correct visible defects before the final coats are applied.
